Top 10 worst gifts for new relationships

Kristen Sasser, Yahoo! Personals' online dating expert, has put together a list of the top 10 worst gifts for new relationships.

Click here for the story and full list.

Most notable is No. 9: "Forget clichés, such as boxes of chocolates or flowers. They show little thought or effort."

A new relationship needs coddling and it should be easy to figure out ways to put your own personal touches on the clichéd gifts. Maybe you find a way to give her sunflowers - paper-mâché perhaps - in the middle of the winter, or you purchase a teddy bear that is decked out in Carolina Panthers gear (his favorite team).

Let's put a positive spin on this and ask, what are your ideas for good gifts to give your new partner?

If I give a woman flowers and she considers that thoughtless, I probably don't want to date her anyway.

A small piece of art is often a good gift. They'll have it forever (unlike flowers or candy) and it shows that you put some thought into it. Just nothing too big: I'm talking shelf-sized.

Yet another negative entry accentuating the worst from Alisha Hord. "We can relate"?? More like "We can gripe and bitch constantly".

moleen zander, I hope your day, week, month and/or year gets better. How is an item on "What not to give" negative? Lots of us DO need direction. I stressed for weeks on what to give my, now, husband for our 1st Christmas.

Anonymous @ 5:11-Flowers are always welcome BUT if you picked them up at the local HT or mini-mart on the way, not so thoughtful.

My husband broke a hard and fast family rule for our 1st Christmas, he gave me a birthday gift (my b-day is the week before) for both birthday and Christmas. A surprise party! It took lots of time and planning to get all of my dearest there during such a very busy time. He has given me many wonderful gifts but I don't think he can ever "top" the first he gave me.

I agree with clayj, a small piece of art, something picked-up and remembered from a past conversation can be an incredible gift.

Take joy in giving, if the recipient is not responsive to your gift maybe that tells you something about that person.

One that I disagree with is the one that says "Clothing may be offensive, especially if you aren't sure about what size to purchase." I'm buying clothes for my 1st Christmas with my girlfriend and holy cow, how the heck do you ladies do this!? I mean seriously, JC Penney's XL = Macy's Large = NY & Company Medium = AF's Size 10. There's no logic to this! I'd think women should be the first to know that if a man is trying to buy you clothes and he buys a shirt that's a size too big, he's not trying to insult you. He just looked through your collection and saw you wore a medium! He didn't put the 'M' on the shirt that now looks too big. It's a risky move to buy clothes, but how awesome is it if I bring home something very nice that she absolutely loves in the right size?

Alisha, obviously Moleen Zander is unhappy with you, please, ignore the ignorant. Thought the blog was really great. 1st Christmas should be easier now than it used to be. With the accessibility to the internet everyone can just about order anything they want to for the ones they love. Fella's buy the clothes. At least for myself it truly is the thought that counts, I'll take it back if it doesn't fit and smile at the thought that you really cared enough to try.

Heh.. you're calling others 'ignorant'? You thought "her blog" was great? It wasn't even her blog! It was a copy n' pasted article from Reuters

So, posting a link to a real article someone else wrote and adding "what do ya'll think" is something you get paid a living wage to do????!?!? This is journalism?? Incredible.

No wonder the Observer is considered by most publications as a shining beacon of stupidity.

Re Moleen and the negativity:

Alisha wrote, "Let's put a positive spin on this."

I find it VERY ironic that the complaint from Moleen Zander is about Alisha griping and bitching. I don't know that I've heard much more griping and bitching than from the two Zander posts - about this blog, about the other comments, about the Observer. I get the feeling griping and bitching is something they know a lot about...

A blog is meant to be informational, topical, thought provoking. Sometimes that is accomplished by sharing with readers something that was read elsewhere. For readers that do not like the typical contents of a particular blog, there are many others to choose from across the WWW.
